Louis Moholo-Moholo
Louis Moholo-Moholo (1940-2025) was a South African jazz drummer, born in Langa, Cape Town. He left South Africa in 1964 with Chris McGregor's Blue Notes and spent decades in exile in Britain, where he became a central figure in free jazz and improvised music. He returned to South Africa in 2005 and died in Cape Town. Louis Moholo-Moholo led his own band, the Chordettes, as a teenager before joining the Blue Notes alongside Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani and Nikele Moyake. The group grew into the Brotherhood of Breath big band, and he also formed Assagai with Feza and Pukwana.
