Meredith Monk
Meredith Monk, born in New York in 1942, is an American composer, singer, director and choreographer who has spent six decades in the spaces between music, theatre and dance. She is best known for her vocal innovations, a wide range of extended techniques developed first in her solo performances and then with her own ensemble, in which the voice becomes an instrument of syllable, cry and melody beyond words. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence, she founded The House in 1968 for interdisciplinary performance and the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble in 1978, and created large works such as Dolmen Music, Book of Days and the opera Atlas.
