Neu!
Neu! was the duo of Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, formed in Düsseldorf in 1971 after both had played briefly in an early line-up of Kraftwerk. With the producer Conny Plank they made three albums for Brain, Neu! (1972), Neu! 2 (1973) and Neu! '75 (1975). Dinger's steady, insistent drumming, later known as motorik, ran under Rother's layered guitar lines, a pattern much borrowed since. Rother also played in Harmonia with Cluster and later worked solo, while Dinger formed La Düsseldorf. Sessions from 1985 and 1986 surfaced as Neu! 4 in 1995 and officially as Neu! '86 in 2010. Dinger died of heart failure in March 2008.
