Neu! were two refugees from the earliest Kraftwerk, the guitarist Michael Rother and the drummer Klaus Dinger, who left to chase a starker idea. Neu! 2, from 1973, is famous less for its first side than for what happens on the second, where the pair, out of money and out of time, took their latest single and simply played it at the wrong speeds, dragging it to a crawl and chirping it up to a squeak.
Some heard a swindle; in hindsight it reads as an early act of remixing, a conceptual shrug that anticipated decades of studio mischief. The opening tracks, meanwhile, refine Dinger's relentless forward beat, the pulse later christened motorik. Released by United Artists.
