Philip Corner, born in New York in 1933, is a composer, pianist, trombonist and calligrapher associated with Fluxus, Judson Dance Theater and early American minimalism. During military service in Korea he discovered calligraphy and the slow court music of Sujecheon, and both have stayed with him: scores as drawings, sounds that move at the pace of breathing. Many of his more than four hundred works leave much to the performers, in standard notation, graphic scores or plain text; others use chance, unintended sound, non-Western instruments and tunings.
