Salvatore Sciarrino
Salvatore Sciarrino is an Italian composer, born in Palermo in 1947. He came to music after studying the visual arts and was largely self-taught, with early guidance from Turi Belfiore. His music works close to silence, built on small shifts of timbre, breath-like sounds and barely audible noises. Sciarrino moved to Rome in 1969 and studied electronic music with Franco Evangelisti. He was artistic director of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna from 1978 to 1980 and taught at the Milan Conservatory before settling in Città di Castello in Umbria.
