Kaloja (simply “some fish” in Finnish) is the long‑gestating duo of Jan Anderzén (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset Ystävät, Tarzana) and Paul Wilson (F.Ampism, Yayoba), finally surfacing with their debut LP A Body of Water. Both musicians have, through solo and ensemble releases on labels such as Leaving Records, Hive Mind, Ikuisuus, Not Not Fun and others, carved out an iconic sonic niche that delights in synthesis, psychedelic composition, physical modelling, impressionistic reveries and micro/macro world‑building. Their meeting under the name Kaloja channels those tendencies into a new, shared environment where sounds behave less like notes and more like organisms.

In line with the album’s title, what stands out in A Body of Water is the oddly pastoral quality that emerges when their pieces are infused with the duo’s mastery of technological arrays. Rather than cold experimentalism, the record feels like electronic folk from another climate: a landscape of streams, ponds and unseen weather phenomena rendered through digital harmoniums, mock strings, simulated voices and glass‑like resonances. Anderzén carries forward much of the Finnish school’s signature sound he helped shape over the years - upbeat, harmonically reassuring, compositionally rich and faintly cartoonish in its brightness - while Wilson’s biome‑like approach to sonic manipulation makes every element feel alive, hyper‑tactile and possessed of a will of its own.

The result is a curious ensemble of abstract figures moving through an unstable landscape governed by unfamiliar laws, a setting that feels uncannily familiar without ever turning hostile. Tones bend, sprout overtones and then slip sideways into other textures; percussive details flit like insects above slow‑moving pads; small melodic cells drift through simulated spaces as if carried by currents. Much as in the graphics and photographs that accompany the release, Kaloja occupy an interstice between cosmic and earthly registers, expanding their sonic life force from that point. You can almost hear the “some fish” of their name darting through these waters - not as literal samples, but as the playful, darting energy that animates the music.
