Minneapolis is not the first place anyone thinks of when they think about free improvisation, which is roughly the point. Milo Fine has spent five decades there playing drums, clarinet and piano in almost total commercial isolation, releasing his own records on his own Shih Shih Wu Ai imprint, named for a Buddhist concept of unobstructed interpenetration. Improvisations is exactly what the title promises: unedited, unaccompanied by any commercial consideration, and remarkably rigorous. Fine's approach owes something to the European free scene and nothing at all to the American loft aesthetic, and the results have a dry, argumentative quality that rewards close attention.
Original private pressing on Shih Shih Wu Ai, tiny run. Genuine outsider free music, and almost never seen for sale.
