Biggest Tip!  180 gram Vinyl Edition. Gatefold Cover. The photo of Pharoah Sanders in lotus position, generously collared psychedelic shirt poking out from under his white robes, says it all. Having abandoned the Ayler-influenced sound of Pharoah's First, released almost a decade previously, by Village Of The Pharoahs the saxophonist had jumped with both feet into the soaring and the spiritual. The album is a slightly mixed bag, with material from the main San Francisco sessions bulked out with tracks recorded in New Jersey and New York. It's also unusual in that Sanders plays tenor on just one track, the rest of the time contributing a combination of soprano, bells, percussion and vocals and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! The session features a blend of shorter songs compared to previous ones. The overall vibe remains spiritual, but there is a newfound sense of focus that adds an incredible punch, even during more contemplative moments. The lineup features familiar faces such as Norman Connors on drums and Cecil McBee on bass, along with some fresh talent like Art Webb on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, and Jimmy Hopps on drums. However, what truly stands out are the mesmerizing vocals on the album. Sedatrius Brown takes on a unique approach, blending elements of Leon Thomas' spiritual style with a touch of raw earthiness. Other members of the group also contribute additional vocalizations that complement the overall sound.
