Gene Puerling had already reinvented vocal jazz once with the Hi-Lo's when he formed The Singers Unlimited in Chicago in 1967, initially to sing jingles. Oscar Peterson heard a demo and got them signed to MPS, the German label that treated them the way it treated its pianists: close-miked, multitracked, allowed to be strange. Puerling's method was to overdub the four voices into eight, twelve, sixteen parts, producing chords no vocal group could sing live and a texture closer to a Ligeti cluster than to a barbershop quartet.

Just in Time has the quartet with orchestra, standards arranged so densely that the melody sometimes disappears into the harmony and has to be located by ear. This is the Japanese MPS edition, which is the one to have for pressing quality. Easy listening only if you are not listening.
