A guitarist's guitarist, and the man who worked out how to play bebop lines on the instrument without simply imitating a horn. Jimmy Raney came up with Stan Getz and the Red Norvo trio, absorbed the Lennie Tristano approach to long melodic construction, and developed a cool, dry, harmonically sophisticated style that influenced more players than his record sales ever suggested. Momentum finds him on MPS, which means the recording quality is exceptional and the setting is unhurried. Single-note lines of remarkable logic, almost no chording, and a complete absence of showmanship.
Japanese MPS pressing. Quietly one of the great jazz guitarists, and still under-heard.
