The volume with the session everyone knows about. By July 1946 Charlie Parker had run out of heroin, was drinking to compensate, and arrived at the Dial studio in a condition that Ross Russell should have sent him home from. He recorded anyway. The result includes a "Lover Man" so wrecked and so naked that Parker spent the rest of his life asking for it to be withdrawn, and which Russell released regardless. It is genuinely painful to hear. Hours later he set his hotel room on fire and was committed to Camarillo. The rest of the volume is Parker functioning, which makes the contrast worse.
