New York, autumn 1947, and Charlie Parker is out of hospital, off the West Coast, and leading the best band of his life. The quintet with Miles Davis, Duke Jordan, Tommy Potter and Max Roach recorded a run of sessions for Dial that season which represent the absolute centre of the bop repertoire: "Dexterity", "Dewey Square", "Embraceable You". Davis had grown up enormously in eighteen months and had started playing in the middle register with that spare, deliberate phrasing that would define him. Parker is playing better than at any other documented moment.
