These two seminal works from 1981-1983 represent the composer's profound engagement with temporal perception and sonic cosmology, now available in their first complete authorized edition.
In Passages (1981), Nemescu constructs what he termed "a geography of resonant time" through his revolutionary treatment of instrumental harmonics. The work's shimmering string textures and bell-like percussion create an immersive meditation on what the composer described as "chronomorphology" - the shaping of musical time as plastic material. Its companion piece À Travers Le Temps (1983) expands this temporal exploration through spatialized instrumental groups that seem to occupy different time dimensions simultaneously.
Created during Romania's isolated communist period, these works demonstrate how Nemescu developed his spectral language independently from Western contemporaries while sharing their fascination with sound's inner life. Musicologist Tim Hodgkinson notes: "Nemescu doesn't merely compose music - he curates encounters with time itself, making audible the inaudible dimensions of sonic existence."
