Patricia Satterwhite, Jacolby Satterwhite, Nick Weiss

Patricia was the second release in Anthem, the vinyl series of the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The 2016 Biennale was curated by the New York collective DIS, and the series was produced with The Vinyl Factory under the direction of Total Freedom (Ashland Mines). Anthem paired artists and musicians who would not normally meet. This record goes further, since its main voice belongs to someone outside the art world altogether. Patricia Satterwhite, mother of the artist Jacolby Satterwhite, recorded several hundred a cappella songs at home over a decade. She also drew and imagined household and cosmetic products. Her son had long traced those drawings into his performances, videos and 3D animations, where he dances and vogues inside virtual worlds. He has said that putting himself in a virtual world is a political gesture, a way to escape the history and anxiety that objects carry. Here her tapes become music in their own right.

Jacolby Satterwhite worked on the recordings with Nick Weiss, one half of the electronic duo Teengirl Fantasy, whose albums came out on True Panther and R&S, and who also produces as Nightfeelings. The two chose a handful of Patricia's songs from the hundreds she had taped, then recorded, repurposed and produced them, with Total Freedom also listed as producer. Satterwhite also made the artwork. Side A holds Birds In Paradise, about four minutes long. Side B has the longer We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other, close to six minutes. The Vinyl Factory described a hyper-real hybrid of Eastern harmonies and jagged electronics. Vice heard "a pair of fluidly mutating singles" (2016). Patricia Satterwhite died in 2016. The collaboration went on: Satterwhite and Weiss continued as PAT, a name taken from hers. In 2019 they released the album Love Will Find A Way Home through Pioneer Works Press. Both titles from this EP return there, credited with the vocalist Patrick Belaga, among other pieces built from her cassettes.
