* Special edition of 30 copies with Download Code and unique Machine Drawn Print (30 x 30 cm), signed by Peter Beyls * The evolutionary trajectory of Peter Beyls charts an ever-expanding orbit through technological, artistic, and intellectual spaces, where boundaries between media dissolve and new modes of expression emerge. Born in 1950, Beyls has systematically explored the fertile intersection of computer science and contemporary art, contributing to the vanguard of generative practice in both music and the visual arts. His education - integrating the rigorous methodologies of EMS, Stockholm, the Royal Music Conservatory, Brussels, and the Slade School of Art, UC London - equipped him with a singular hybrid perspective, refined further by collaborations with pivotal figures in electronic and experimental music.
Initial forays into electronic composition saw Beyls deeply immersed in the possibilities of tape music, then, propelled by curiosity and ambition, into the design of analog live systems. The early 1970s marked a pivotal collaboration with Michel Waisvisz at STEIM, Amsterdam, resulting in the prototyping of the iconic crackle box synthesizer. This era, thrumming with potential and experimentation, was also defined by mentorship from Belgian visionaries Karel Goeyvaerts and Lucien Goethals at the IPEM Studio. Each partnership and exchange expanded Beyls’ vocabulary, pushing beyond existing paradigms into uncharted soundscapes.
Beyls' impact, however, runs deeper than invention or technical prowess. Across decades, he has persistently interrogated the relationship between human agency and machine logic - whether drawing unpredictable machine-generated forms, building interactive audiovisual environments, or constructing music systems animated by artificial intelligence. His creations engage listeners and viewers in a dynamic, participatory encounter, dissolving the boundaries between composer, performer, and audience. International lectures and exhibitions have amplified his influence, demonstrating the restless curiosity that defines his output.
The newly unveiled selection of four tracks - among Beyls' earliest - offers a rare window onto these formative explorations, each piece merging the tactile immediacy of the Crackle Box, Synthi 100, and VCS3 with an ear for nuanced tape editing and delicate electronic gesture. These recordings document not only a crucial technological era but also a foundational moment for generative art, foregrounding the dynamic interplay between invention, intuition, and formal rigor that has characterized Beyls' lifetime of inquiry. Here, emerging technologies and avant-garde vision intertwine, yielding a sound both historic and vividly alive.
