On Pillars, Francesca Flora & nobile build a haunted architecture out of nothing but voice and machinery. Flora’s sighs, screams and murmurs are dissected and reassembled into slow-motion laments and grotesque lullabies, as if Ballard’s singing statues had learned to confess, choke and glow from within.

In 1962 Ballard wrote a tale about singing statues scattered across a vermilion-sands desert. Languid emblems of a future already gone that kept vibrating their melodies against the vast cliffs beyond the dunes.

Much like in Ballard’s vision, the voices and soundscapes of pillars seem to emerge from a time out of sync. Brazen in their eeriness, they dwell where echoes come back heavier than they left, as if they carried back the cavern itself.

Fully composed through the mechanical re-elaboration of Francesca Flora's vocal expression, pillars work as her sighs, screams, hums, laments, jingles, words and phrases, surgically assembled by nobile into sorrowful and grotesque musical tales. Each sound belongs to the arpeggio of a vocal chord, giving birth to an elegy of the intimacy it withholds and of the dread it provokes.

Francesca Flora & nobile find their common ground below a gutter where the dark can unleash, where sheer rays of light hardly make their way in.

Francesca Flora (1994, lives and works in Marseille) is an artist, writer and performer, whose works pivot on the hinges of language and the human voice, which are considered as realms that activate and intertwine through their own affectivity and emotionality. Poetic-prosaic language is the central medium of her research, which develops through both individual practice and collaborations.

Matteo Nobile aka nobile (1983, lives and works in Milan) is a musician and sound artist, whose research investigates sound’s emotive landscape, aiming to narrate a form of instinctive poetics characterised by ambient sonic passages, organic throbs and rhythmic textures. His most recent tape Fantastico Interiore has been released by OOH-sounds in 2024.
