Essential anthology culling sonic experiments made between late '60s and early 70s by the legendary composer, performer, and poet Jackson MacLow. The work of Jackson MacLow, was concerned with the primacy of words, their structures and especially their sounds, and the ways that they could combine with each other beyond the strictures of linguistic framework. His alternative frameworks often depended on chance, discovering ways randomly to combine words or pieces of works to create new forms and meanings. Strongly influenced by Buddhism, he introduced, in 1954, the use of systematic-chance operations, regulated improvisation, and indeterminacy into the compositions and performance of the verbal and theatrical works (these concepts had earlier been utilized in the music of John Cage, Earle Browne and other American composers).

Mac Low's works and words have been published in Europe in Fluxus Festivals in the 1960's, and together with his electronic poetry, were presented in 1966 at New York's Town Hall with the composer-produced electronic music of James Tenney and an electronic installation by Max Neuhaus.

As a pioneer of what was sometimes called "sound poetry", he was also a forerunner of performance art, often working in multimedia before that term was coined. He was a founding member of the neo-Dada art movement Fluxus, he influenced groups including New York's Language poets, and also many poets in Britain, including Bob Cobbing.
