Raposa Velha was a notable Bahian jazz group, which was part of the wave of great musicians and bands from Bahia during the 1980s, such as Sexteto do Beco, Saul Barbosa and Andréa Daltro. Thus, Raposa Velha released only this album, independently in 1981. Outlined between jazz-fusion and avant-garde jazz, this LP has become a very obscure piece within the Brazilian jazz universe.

"Reissued through Mad About Records, Grupo Raposa Velha’s self-titled recording stands out amongst much of the jazz being recorded in Brazil around the 1980s. Although the album has a jazz fusion feel, it leans towards the avant-garde with its probing staccato accents that interject and keep the music shifting with tempos and angles.

Recorded in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1981 the self-funded private press album is one of those really obscure pieces that has been highly collectable for many years. The album features artwork by Brazilian artist Dicinho, who was also the creator of one of the Tropicalismo movement’s most emblematic covers, the 1969 album by Gal Costa. The artwork was photographed by Nicolau Rios.
Zeca Feitas featured on the seminal self-titled 1980 album by Sexteto Do Beco and here, as well as writing all the compositions, he adds that ephemeral quality one would associate with legendary groups such as Azymuth. Fred Dantas brings a progressive edge to the trombone, adding stuttering soulful avant-garde shapes and colours to the album; reflections of Phil Ranelin spring to mind. Paulo Brasil really underpins the whole album with superb guitar work that adds the emotional platform for the other musicians to pivot. Carlinhos Marques features on electric bass and Jorge Brasil features on drums, both driving and tempering the direction and mood with a kind of padding that keeps the warmth within the feel of the recording as a whole. There’s a uniqueness to the album that stands out and invites you into the experience.
Thankfully this very obscure gem of an album has been reissued and it’s a recording that one can enjoy in its entirety as each track seems to be part of a larger theme." - Mark Jones
