Things that Happen Again offers a panoramic entry point into the lucid, evolving world of Paul Newland. Recorded by Apartment House at Goldsmiths in 2023, the album presents compositions written across a fourteen-year span. The title alludes to Newland’s fascination with recurrence and reworking - tracks such as “Difference is Everywhere (altered again)” or “Things That Happen Again (again)” are not only marked by repetition but by acts of subtle reinvention, echoing Newland's habit of dismantling and reconfiguring his own musical ideas over time.

The quintet of pieces includes “Monotonous Forest,” inspired by the labyrinthine, ever-shifting paths of woodland and Heidegger’s idea of Holzwege - layers overlapping, sometimes drifting into near-stasis, sometimes cut by abrupt silences. Locus, in turn, is an open-instrumentation score: each musician selects a limited sound-world, with durations and silences unfolding as chosen from a set grid, yielding overlapping but distinct textural strata. “Difference is Everywhere (altered again)” is structured for string quartet, and takes its title from Wandelweiser founder Antoine Beuger; its pared-down surface radiates a fine-grained attention to timbral shadow, repetition, and the art of pausing.

Throughout, silence and flow are just as significant as notes—a sparse and absorbing attention guides every gesture. Performers - among them Siwan Rhys, Gordon MacKay, Anton Lukoszevieze, Mira Benjamin, Ben Smith, George Barton, Chihiro Ono, Heather Roche, and Gavin Morrison - reveal new timbres and shades in each iteration or fragment. The album closes with “Laurence Crane on Whitecross St.”, a solo piano piece that glances toward specific memory and pared-down lyricism. Things that Happen Again is a sustained invitation to pause, listen into layers, and recognize transformation where it is least dramatic; it cements Newland as a quietly radical artist whose music rewards attention to the tiniest gestures and the processes of continual becoming.
