Ask any musician who came up in the sixties which pianist they most wanted behind them and a startling number will say Wynton Kelly. He is on Kind Of Blue, he is on Full House, he made Wes Montgomery sound better than anyone else did, and he almost never got the credit because he was too busy making other people comfortable. Wynton Kelly! puts him out front with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, the rhythm section he had worked with in the Miles band, and what you hear is that famous bounce: a slightly ahead-of-the-beat swing and a bluesy comping instinct that nobody has satisfactorily imitated.
