In Freundschaft
*2022 Stock.* The Stockhausen Edition no. 101  contains four new arrangements of the solo work In Freundschaft (In Friendship). In Freundschaft was written as a clarinet solo for (and dedicated to) woodwind player Suzanne Stephens for her birthday and was first premiered by her in 1978, though a flute version was performed earlier during Stephens' actual birthday celebration. In the following years, Stockhausen composed versions for many more instruments, including recorder, oboe, bassoon (w. te…
Klang- Die 24 Stunden Des Tages: 3.Stunde: Natürliche Dauern Für Klavier
*2022 Stock.* Natürliche Dauern (Natural Durations, 3rd Hour from Klang) for piano (2005/06) is presented in a 2 CD set. Some of these short piano etudes (24 in all) are predicated on the decay times of sustained, pianistic attacks, while others are fascinating explorations of melodic and rhythmic contrast. These final, late-era piano pieces are truly beautiful postcards of shape and color.- Stockhausenspace.blogspot.com
Music for saxophone with Julien Petit
*2022 Stock.* This CD features the saxophone artistry of Julien Petit. Some of these works were originally written for other wind instruments from 1976 to 1986, but are here newly arranged for saxophone. The 2nd saxophone part of Knabenduett is played by Antonio Felippe Belijar, and some relatively minimal percussion was provided by Michael Pattmann and Kathinka Pasveer.- Stockhausenspace.blogspot.com
Klavierstücke I-XIV
*2022 Stock. Includes a 86-page booklet.* Although several recordings of Stockhausen's cycle for solo piano have been recorded over the decades, notably by David Tudor and Aloys Kontarsky, this set is the definitive edition, with Ellen Corver presenting the first 14 Klavierstücke, working directly under Stockhausen's supervision and incorporating his latest corrections/additions. Stockhausen first started working with Corver in 1982, and these tracks were recorded in 1997/98. The 86-page booklet…
Vom Klang Des Lebens / Of The Sound Of Life, Stundenbuch / Book Of Hours, Buch Der Sterne / Book Of Stars (Edition Of Contemporary German Piano Music)
Vom Klang Des Lebens/ Of The Sound Of Life features pianist Roger Woodward on a Steinway model D, playing Peter Michael Hamel's cycle of works composed for and dedicated to his wife and new son. The producer/engineer for the recording sessions in January 2006 was Ulrich Kraus. Long before he discerns the light of the world, still in the womb, nascent man begins to sense the sounds of life. Long before his spirit attempts to differentiate experiences, develop ideas or make his mark on the path of…
The Complete Piano Music Of Georges I. Gurdjieff And Thomas De Hartmann
The music produced from the remarkable collaboration of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann typifies the creative explorations undertaken by many artists just after the turn of the 20th century. In visual art, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) explored abstraction in both sight and sound, while composer Alexandre Skryabin (1872-1915) proposed an æsthetic format through his compositions that entailed the collaboration of colors, sounds, scents and movement. Each of these artists and th…
Ftarri's Harmonium
Why is there a harmonium (reed organ) at Ftarri? It all goes back to the Ftarri Festival held in Tokyo in November 2019. A quartet made up of Klaus Lang (harmonium), Johnny Chang (violin), Samuel Dunscombe (bass clarinet) and Michiko Ogawa (clarinet) was planned for the festival's final day, so Ogawa quickly purchased a used harmonium for Lang. As she lives in Berlin, Ogawa and Ftarri decided that the harmonium would be housed there temporarily and used in Ftarri concerts.Composer Masamichi Kino…
The Works for Piano 11: Cheap Imitation
All of these works by Cage are influenced by Satie. Cage’s friend and colleague Morton Feldman made an arrangement of Cage’s solo piano “Cheap Imitation” for a trio of piano, flutes/piccolo and glockenspiel. Feldman’s admiration for the pianist Aki Takahashi caused him to gift this arrangement to her. And, full circle, we have the repertoire of this album.  The major discovery is Feldman’s arrangement of Cheap Imitation for this very Feldmanesque instrumental ensemble. It is unknown why Feldman …
Guitars
Taku Sugimoto is a Tokyo-based guitarist and composer. Improvisation is one aspect of his work, but currently his main activities are composing and performing composed pieces (including those of other composers). He continues his global and concentrated interaction with composers from around the world, particularly those closely connected with Wandelweiser. Ftarri had previously released two albums under Sugimoto's name alone—Septet (2015) and Quintets: Berlin, San Diego (2017). On both CDs, his…
The Works for Piano 10
"The Solo for Piano is part of the legendary Concert for Piano and Orchestra. It is an indeterminate work, consisting of 63 pages made of 84 different types of composition, each appearing as its own type of notation. The performer creates his own performance by choosing which pages to play and in which order; pages can also be omitted. John Cage began by choosing, using chance operations, a way of composing based on either his Music for Piano series – single notes, or on Winter Music – chords, o…
Works for Flute
"Flutist Roberto Fabbriciani continues his releases dedicated to the flute repertoire of single composers with works by Belgian composer Henri Pousseur (1929-2009). Previous releases on Mode featured Aldo Clementi and Bruno Maderna. As with Fabbriciani’s preceeding Clementi and Maderna releases, this Pousseur release marks the first time Pousseur’s works for flute have been collected in one recording. It is important to note that Fabbriciani had a long working relationship with the composer. The s…
Colour Talk
**CD version** Bram De Looze is a Belgian pianist and composer whose distinct musical vision has found its way through both solo projects and collaborations. His unique technical skill and musical maturity have earned him considerable critical acclaim back home as his work spotlights his far-ranging interests – from traditional classical piano music, to solo improvisations that have often been compared to Keith Jarrett and Jason Moran.
Traces of Eternity: of What Is Yet To Be
**300 copies** "There have been quite a few releases of Antoine Beuger’s music over the past several years and it’s an odd, and very pleasurable thing to consider them en masse. On the one hand, his music is so diaphanous, so air-suffused that you’d think it might be difficult (not to mention unnecessary) to differentiate them mentally. On the other, they’re always very different. There’s that old AMM aphorism: “as alike or unalike as trees” that conveys something of my feelings about Beuger’s w…
Sale Quanto Basta
Paolo Angeli’s latest is an extraordinary collection of pieces that explore the full range of his highly modified, extended and prepared Sardinian guitar; and although it’s just him and electricity, it seldom sounds like fewer than 3 people. Great compositions, each like a short novel, beautifully recorded. Paolo’s unique music defies genre or category - at once accessible, experimental, tuneful, tactile, ambient, with a folk root and a rock inflection and a contemporary outlook. And his instrum…
