Catherine Christer Hennix

Catherine Christer Hennix (1948 to 2023) was a Swedish composer, mathematician, poet and visual artist who moved between avant-garde music and the foundations of logic. Trained in the tradition of Xenakis and Stockhausen in the 1960s, she met La Monte Young and the Hindustani raga master Pandit Pran Nath at the Fondation Maeght in 1970 and studied for years with both, bringing a rigorous mathematical basis to just-intonation drone. Her masterwork The Electric Harpsichord (1976) is a swirling wall of sustained tones, and with her Deontic Miracle ensemble she extended the same ideas to modal brass and voice.
