The Cosmic Jokers were never a band. In 1973 the producer Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and his partner Gille Lettmann, who ran the Ohr and Kosmische Kuriere labels, gathered Manuel Göttsching, Klaus Schulze, Jürgen Dollase, Harald Grosskopf and the engineer Dieter Dierks for a series of long, free sessions in Dierks's studio, with the idea of a virtual musical tribe expanding the world's consciousness. Kaiser then cut the tapes into albums and released them without the musicians' consent, which ended in lawsuits and the collapse of his labels.
