Pierre Favre

Country: Switzerland

Pierre Favre (born 1937 in Le Locle) is a Swiss drummer, percussionist and composer. Self-taught, he moved from Dixieland and bebop to free jazz in the 1960s, and he later toured as a solo percussionist and led his own percussion ensembles. He is known for his work with Irène Schweizer and for his records on ECM and Intakt. Favre turned professional at 17 and played with Bud Powell and Booker Ervin before forming a free jazz trio with Schweizer, which later became a quartet with Evan Parker. He also worked for the cymbal maker Paiste.

The Art Of Sound(s)
"In times like ours, such an absence of the ordinary, of the real, may not exactly be a political statement. But as a social concept, this kind of music might be a beginning—a step toward a different, perhaps better, perception of the world around us. And that’s precisely what “The Art of Sound(s)“ is: Because as soon as the molecules start dancing in this chamber of reflections, art is becoming a true and selfless act of existentialism." - Rudolf Amstutz
Abanaba (LP)
Original 1972 LP on the highly collectable Futura label and one of their best titles, percussive drums solo improvisations at their best.
Souffles
1998 release ** "Percussionist Pierre Favre's Singing Drums is a band that has at its root a charmingly -- and perhaps confoundingly -- simple presumption at its core: that rhythm, well-placed and woven rather than placed on top of or underneath any mix of instruments, will be compulsively attractive for almost any listener. On Souffles, he proves that point over and over again. Singing Drums is a quartet with Favre, fellow percussionist Lucas Niggli, saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, and tuba play…
Saxophones
2004 release ** "The percussionist as poet, the drummer as sound painter, the composer as storyteller, and the improviser as artist of survival. What Pierre Favre writes for the Arte Quartet is like a choral fantasy, a suite for individualists with a strong collective spirit. Four singers, each with their own utterly unique timbre, a chamber choir with a highly developed sonic sensuality. The percussionist runs his threads between the voices, becomes one himself, creates space, provides the beat…

Trinity
*Limited Edition* Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato joins forces with Peter Warren on bass and Pierre Favre on drums in an enthralling collaboration. Recorded live at Studio 70 in Munich, the two expansive tracks showcase the trio's boundless creativity. Sato's piano work, reminiscent of the era's best free improvisation, occasionally channels a Cecil Taylor-like intensity, interspersed with moments of reflective pause. Favre adeptly balances restraint and bursts of energy, complementing Warren's b…
International Holy Hill Jazz Meeting 1969
CD version. BE! JAZZ is happy to come up with a true “holy” modern/free jazz gems of the late 1960s. The original double LP was issued by Meno Liechtenstein’s CB Records – he was also the organizer of the “International Holy Hill Jazz Meeting” in Heidelberg/Germany. The sound quality on the original album was not really bad – but it certainly was not really good as well. We spent a lot of work on a proper restoration of the live tapes. The result is truly amazing – after almost 50 years we are n…
