Stockholm, December 1965: Ornette Coleman returns from his self-imposed sabbatical leading the great trio with David Izenzon and Charles Moffett, live at the Golden Circle - and the results stand with anything he ever recorded, which is to say with anything anyone ever recorded. Izenzon's arco bass is effectively a second horn, weaving countermelodies and drones that give the trio an orchestral reach no three-piece had any right to; Moffett swings the freedom like it was always the natural state of things, because in his hands it was; and Ornette pours out melody after melody with that singing, weeping, laughing alto sound that no one has ever mistaken for anyone else. The Blue Note Golden Circle albums converted a generation of skeptics for one simple reason: the joy is undeniable, the tunes stick, the freedom invites rather than excludes.
Japanese Blue Note pressing from the GXF series, reliably beautiful. Trio jazz at the absolute summit of the form.
