Egisto Macchi was a founding member of the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza alongside Morricone and Franco Evangelisti, a composer with a serious avant-garde pedigree who scored documentaries and produced a body of library music as rigorous as anything he wrote for the concert hall. Biologia animale e vegetale is part of the nature series mentioned above, his contribution to the biology syllabus: cues for cells, plants, animals, in a language of clusters, pointillist percussion and electronic drones that would have been at home at Darmstadt.

Cinedelic's three-LP box collects the material in full, with notes. Of all the Roman library composers Macchi is the one whose work most rewards being heard as music rather than as background, and this is the place to test the claim.
