Anglo-German composer Eden Lonsdale returns to Another Timbre with an ambitious double album that represents his most mature and expansive work to date. Following the critical success of Clear and Hazy Moons, Lonsdale presents five major compositions that explore the boundaries of chamber music through rigorous formal constraints, microtonal explorations, and an extraordinary attention to harmonic metamorphosis.
The first disc, performed by the acclaimed Apartment House, features three pieces for strings: Aurora for solo cello, brilliantly interpreted by Anton Lukoszevieze; the title piece Dawnings, a 32-minute duet for clarinet and piano performed by Heather Roche and Kerry Yong; and Cloud Symmetries, a 34-minute composition for four violins commissioned by Another Timbre. The second disc contains concert recordings of two works for larger ensembles: Constellations, played by the Netherlands-based Oerknal ensemble conducted by Hardy Li at the Gaudeamus Music Week 2023, and Shedding for seven violas, commissioned and performed by Brooklyn's Ensemble Ipse.
Dusted Magazine writes: "Lonsdale turns the notion of cadence on its head. Major and minor resolutions overwhelm in their half-step transience, functioning as operators over which all else occurs but shifting before they can even register as the points of rest... The music is extremely simple, and yet, the ensemble Oerknal brings each gesture to life in that completely fluid context... Anton Lukoszevieze's ravishing take on the solo cello work Aurora buds and blooms in a way that transforms the cello into duos, trios and beyond."
All About Jazz observes: "Lonsdale's music is recognizable from start to finish and is gentle on the ear throughout... On this evidence, it is not difficult to hear why his music is being increasingly acclaimed, performed and commissioned."
Essential listening for admirers of Arvo Pärt, Morton Feldman, and contemporary minimalism.
