For Marco Bellocchio's masterpiece debut film I pugni in tasca (Fists in the Pocket) (1965), Ennio Morricone composed some mysterious and obsessive music for soprano voice, harp, harpsichord, and strings, alternating with lounge music of the period, swing, and jazz to create a great contrast with the dark mood of the movie. A record with very spare sound – weird wordless vocals on the main title track, then really moody music that almost lies beyond the frontiers of hearing at some points – stepping slowly out of the darkness with muted horns, weird-tuned keyboards, and other instrumental elements that are hard to pick out, and which really keep things at an unsettling level throughout.
