The angklung is a set of tuned bamboo rattles from West Java, each player holding one or two pitches and the melody assembled by the ensemble the way a bell choir assembles a hymn, and the sound is one of the most immediately lovable in Southeast Asia: hollow, woody, in tune, faintly comic. Arion recorded a Sundanese ensemble in the seventies, at the moment when the instrument was being modernised for schools and for the tourist stage.

For the listener coming from Reich or from Colin McPhee's Bali, this is a different Indonesia, lighter and more melodic than gamelan, but the interlocking principle is the same. Italian edition, FARN series.
