Electronic Sound ventures out of the concrete bunker to explore the strange and unsettling world of Cold War Electronica - a thrilling investigation into how the nuclear age rewired our ears. This essential issue comes with an exclusive double CD featuring 35 suitably tense tracks spanning 1980 to 2025.
The cover story consists of 10 connected pieces detailing the sonic legacy of atomic anxiety. From pioneering artists like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Daniel Miller in the West to Georg Katzer and Rodion Rosca behind the Iron Curtain, the magazine maps the entire spectrum of Cold War sound. Mark Reeder lifts the lid on East Berlin's deeply underground "walled in" scene, while the issue examines landmark tracks: Paul Rutherford discusses Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Two Tribes', Midge Ure remembers Ultravox's 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes', and Martyn Ware reflects on Heaven 17's 'Let's All Make A Bomb'. Additional features explore 'When The Wind Blows', 'Threads', and the remarkable tale of Radiophonic legend Roger Limb's role in the UK government's Protect And Survive campaign.
Beyond the cover story, the issue features in-depth pieces on William Basinski, Chicks On Speed, Graham Massey and Jonny Slut. The magazine celebrates the life and work of EMS co-founder Tristram Cary on the 100th anniversary of his birth, and pays tribute to Dave Ball (Soft Cell, The Grid) and Keith McIvor (Optimo), both recently lost to the electronic music community.
The exclusive double CD soundtrack takes in minimal synth, darkwave, post-punk, industrial, weird pop and abrasive ambient - plenty of tension, anxiety, fear and paranoia, with a side order of doom and gloom. Disturbing and totally brilliant.
Disc 1: Cold War Electronica 1980-1989 covers the decade when American-Russian relations strained close to breaking point. Contributors include Bill Nelson, Section 25, Oppenheimer Analysis, Konstruktivists, Cultural Amnesia, 23 Skidoo and Nagamatzu, alongside five key names from East Berlin's "walled in" scene - most tracks originally appearing on limited edition cassettes sold under the noses of the secret police.
Disc 2: Cold War Electronica 2017-2025 begins with 2017, the year global media started discussing a new Cold War. Artists span a dozen countries: Veryan, Concretism and Polypores represent the UK, while Mary Ocher, Sonologyst, Desinteresse and Night In Athens join from across Europe. Ukrainian duo Blazerjacket contribute a track inspired by the Russian invasion of their country.
As with all Electronic Sound releases, this double CD is available exclusively to magazine readers.
