Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Harold Land, Joe Farrell, George Duke, Shelly Manne and Peter Erskine in various combinations, playing to the enormous and famously attentive Japanese audiences of the period. The all-star format usually produces polite music; here the generational spread does something more interesting, with the fusion players and the hard bop veterans having to find common ground on stage in real time.
