Kajang gathers four previously unreleased compositions, written between 2015 and 2020, by Otto Sidharta, a pioneer of Indonesian electronic music. A tireless traveller across Indonesia, Sidharta collects environmental sounds and harmonies wherever he goes and treats them as an endless compositional resource, drawn above all to traditional musics that have stayed sealed off from outside influence. The album takes its title from the Kajang, a closed community in southern Sulawesi that he visited twice, a people who have deliberately cut their ties with the outside world to protect their way of life.
Rather than borrowing tribal motifs, Sidharta works from his own impressions and feeling, "with no calculation", shaping four pieces that read as a contemplation of the self. It follows his earlier Sub Rosa collection, Indonesian Electronic Music 1979-92 (SR452CD, 2017). White vinyl.
