Luxury metal box hand made by artist and sound sculptor Michel Vogel. This art edition, limited to 20 numbered copies, includes the first two record LPs by Vogel, or “Une petite musique de nuit” as well as the new “Ronde matutinal à Amillis / Berenice”. The box also includes an LP-size metal gong contructed by the artist, protected by a silk bag. His hand-made gongs are out of tune instruments particularly appreciated by Fluxus artist Philip Corner who recorded sevaral improvisations with these off-control instruments.
Born in 1941 in Strasbourg, France, Michel Vogel artistic activities start in 1960 when, as a painter under the materic influences of Antoni Tapies and Jean Dubuffet, his mineral and sound experimentations built a universe influenced by free jazz, extra-European music and Olivier Messiaen. His researches develop with new sculptures and the creation of his own resonating metal instruments. His friends of the minimalist group, and specially the Fluxus artists, supported and pushed him to carry on his acoustics explorations while his sonic creations get closer to the music of John Cage, Philip Corner, Morton Feldman and Giacinto Scelsi.
“Une petite musique de nuit” is an improvisation for large size gongs 'prepared' with metal rods, little gong, Chinese cymbal, caoutchouc ball, recorded live with no over-dubbing the night of January 18th, 2002. On the other hand both “Ronde mattinale à Amillis” and “Berenice” are more early-morning oriented realizations for ‘prepared’ gongs and self-built metal instruments and sculptures.
