Porch Music documents No Hope Orchestra, an ambitious large ensemble led by Paul McCarthy and featuring core members of the Los Angeles Free Music Society. Recorded live at The Box gallery concert in Los Angeles, the project harnesses a vivid assembly of improvisers—Mitchell Brown, Elaine Carey, Dennis Duck, Ace Farren Ford, Juan Gomez, Mike Gonzalez, Joseph Hammer, Keith Lubow, Nathaniel Mellors, Joe Potts, Rick Potts, Trevor Rounseville, Alex Stevens, Molly Tierney, and John Wiese. This release, with cover art by Ace Farren Ford, distills the collective’s dynamic noise energy and collaborative ethos into a singular performance.

Porch Music captures a moment in time for the No Hope Orchestra under the direction of Paul McCarthy, at The Box gallery in Los Angeles, California. The project’s collaborative web extends throughout the LAFMS - Mitchell Brown, Elaine Carey, Dennis Duck, Ace Farren Ford, Juan Gomez, Mike Gonzalez, Joseph Hammer, Keith Lubow, Nathaniel Mellors, Joe Potts, Rick Potts, Trevor Rounseville, Alex Stevens, Molly Tierney, and John Wiese - each contributing to the ensemble’s surging improvisational landscape. The collective, active since the early days of the Free Music Society, channels fifty years of DIY ethos, experimental sound practice, and art-driven community engagement into a single, expansive performance.

Led by McCarthy, whose deep ties to both visual and sonic arts have informed generations of artists, No Hope Orchestra combines structured noise tactics with bursts of spontaneous invention. The result is a restless, sometimes irreverent sound world—layering the distinct voices of each member while maintaining kinetic cohesion. The performance unfolds as both celebration and confrontation, with ensemble passages that spiral from subtle drone textures to explosive sonic gestures.

The album’s visual identity is embodied by Ace Farren Ford’s cover art, further binding the work to the aesthetic lineage of LAFMS and its rich history of boundary-pushing music, collaborations, and ephemera. Porch Music stands as evidence of the enduring value of experimental collectives—affirming the power of gathering, improvising, and creating outside institutional boundaries, and serving as a testament to the ongoing vitality of the Free Music Society’s creative vision.
