The Munich commune that called itself Amon Düül had already fractured in two by the time this debut surfaced in 1969, the more capable instrumentalists peeling off to become Amon Düül II while the rest stayed behind and followed the noise wherever it wandered. Psychedelic Underground is what they salvaged from a single marathon jam: six pieces cut, spliced, and doctored by producer Peter Meisel. The seventeen-minute opener lays out the terms, a mammoth drum pulse under chanted voices and circling guitar, far closer to ritual than to rock.
Then the studio tampering begins, fake skips, channels drifting left to right, a classical broadcast bleeding through the seams, accidents that turn out to be deliberate. The fidelity is notoriously rough, and the roughness is the argument. Whether or not it was literally the first krautrock record, it marks the moment the German underground stopped impersonating Anglo-American psychedelia and began to sound like nobody else.
