The tale of Brainticket is really the tale of the Belgian keyboardist Joel Vandroogenbroeck, the one fixed point in a band that reinvented itself with nearly every record. After the notorious debut Cottonwoodhill, rumored to have unhinged a few listeners mid-trip and banned in more than one place, he dissolved the group, moved south, and rebuilt it from scratch. Psychonaut, recorded in Milan and released in 1972, is the calmer sequel: song-shaped, raga-tinged, thick with flute, organ, and Jane Free's vocals, only the closing instrumental nodding back at the chaos that preceded it.
A more recent vinyl reissue on Lilith, the imprint that has returned a great deal of vintage psychedelia to the racks. For anyone who would rather spin Psychonaut than guard an original.
