*50 copies limitede edition* "Selected Instrumental Works" gathers fourteen instrumental pieces composed and recorded by Mathew Sweet under the Boduf Songs name. Stripped of voice and overt song structure, the music turns specifically to atmosphere, tone, and grainy resonance to carry the emotional weight. Piano sits at the center of the record, along with sparse electronics and sustained textures, focusing on harmonic shifts that unfold with deliberate patience.

These dark, reflective, and meditative pieces inhabit a space between ambient composition and funereal hymn. Minimal melodies hover and recede, leaving behind a sense of afterimage rather than resolution. As with Sweet's other work as Boduf Songs, intimacy sits at the heart of the work, like private thoughts given just enough form to be heard. Beneath the melancholic surface runs a current of longing and quiet hope. These pieces reach forward as much as they dwell, holding space for the possibility of warmth even as they circle loss and decay. The piano lines, often hesitant and unresolved, feel like gestures toward connection, fragments of something almost remembered or not yet arrived. Hope here is fragile and persistent, flickering within the same shadows that give the music its weight.

Several of these works have existed for years, waiting for the right context. Collected together, they form a cohesive cycle rather than a retrospective: a series of quiet invocations shaped by repetition, restraint, and an acceptance of stillness. Sequenced as two sets of seven pieces, each forming one side of the cassette, the recording invites continuous, uninterrupted listening, with each half unfolding as its own self-contained movement. This is solitary music, made to be listened to in low light and long shadows. A record of lingering tones, unresolved feelings, and suspended time. Even amid melancholy and mortality, there is a quiet reach toward warmth and connection, a trace of hope that lingers after the echoes fade.
