Four collaborative works (1997-2011) by Australian sound artist Ros Bandt and German composer Johannes S. Sistermanns, including radio pieces for ABC and a simultaneous Melbourne-Frankfurt performance. Released 2012.

tracings documents fifteen years of collaboration between the Australian sound artist Ros Bandt and the German composer and sound artist Johannes S. Sistermanns. The four works, from 1997 to 2011, were made across hemispheres: for radio, for simultaneous performance in Melbourne and Frankfurt, and for a residency in Japan.

Bandt was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1951 and has made interactive sound installations, sound sculptures and spatial music since 1977, in sites from wheat silos and water tanks to Austrian salt mines. She is a recorder player and a champion of the tarhu, a bowed spike fiddle, co-founded ensembles such as LIME, Back to Back Zithers and La Romanesca, and was the first woman to win the Don Banks Composers Award. Her commissions include ABC, WDR and ORF. Sistermanns, born in Cologne in 1955, studied with Mauricio Kagel and works in electroacoustic performance, sound sculpture and radio art. He received the Karl-Sczuka-Förderpreis in 1997 and the Deutscher Klangkunstpreis in 2008. Both compose and perform on the disc. The radio works were produced by Robyn Ravlich with Gary Havrillay as engineer.

A Global Garden for Percy (1997), at 41 minutes the main work, was performed by the two at the same time in separate hemispheres, linked by a digital connection, from the Grainger Museum in Melbourne and the Music Academy in Frankfurt. A year later Bandt curated Beaming the Theremin for the same festival, turning the Grainger Museum into a sound and light installation. It went out live on The Listening Room of ABC Radio in Sydney and online for the Melbourne International Festival, with the Goethe-Institut Melbourne. Whispering Between Stars (1997) comes from the same Melbourne and Frankfurt link. Sonic Blue Red Tracings – Kami (1997-2011) grew out of a residency at the University of Wakayama in Japan, as a multimedia performance with paper and hair dye. BYOS Bring Your Own Sounds, in five parts, was commissioned by ABC Radio in 2006 as a joint composition of unexpected sounds from both artists.

The title refers to the way each work traces its own process: the drawing and designing of sounds that can be seen and heard in maps, scores and performances. For Sistermanns the record continues the cross-cultural line of his Japanese project etc | electric tea ceremony_random, also on this label.

CD, total running time 69'36", released in 2012 by artist.cd / Wergo as ARTS 8120 2.
