Insert included. | One of Edition RZ's most distinctive documents — a survey of Finnish new music from the generation that came of age in the late 1970s and early 1980s, four composers from a country whose radical musical life has too rarely made it into the international record. The label, founded by Berlin curator Robert Zank to document the Inventionen Festival, consistently reached beyond the German orbit to capture the broader geography of the European avant-garde, and this LP is evidence of that ambition.

Patrick Kosk's Transmissions In A... opens the record with a formal interrogation of musical space and transmission — what it means for sound to pass through a medium, to arrive changed. Petri Hiidenkari's Kräftig und Bewegt deploys that Mahlerian tempo marking in a context that strips it of its Romantic associations, leaving something harder and more direct. Harri Vuori's Nagual draws on the concept from the philosophy of don Juan — the untameable, the other side of reality — for a work of sustained disorientation. Tapio Nevanlinna's You Offer Me Out Of Water The Sun and Kreuzwege complete the set with a different kind of compression. Five works, four composers, one important cultural document from the margins of the European new music map. Edition RZ, RZ 3004.
