In the mid1970s, when Tallinnfilm animation studios recruited a youthful bunch of skilled artists and cartoonists, interesting things started to happen. Contemporary themes and ironic depictions of domestic life were introduced into Estonian animation – as well as pop-art aesthetics and even psychedelic imagery.
Also, composers found their chance to exercise something beyond the routine standards of pop a…

Temporary Super Offer! *2024 stock* Gruff Rhys presents the soundtrack for the film Set Fire To The Stars (2014). Although recorded around the same time as Gruff's last LP (2014's hugely acclaimed American Interior), Set Fire To The Stars paints a very different picture to that of the Welsh explorer John Evans. Equal parts cocktail jazz, hazy Americana and atomic age bop, it's a love letter to New York in all its hopeful, post war glory - a gorgeous diversion of a record to add to Gruff's increa…
Temporary Super Offer! One of the best, and most necessary reissues of the year. Filed neatly and undisturbed within the micro-genre of 1970s Italian artsploitation, amongst films soundtracks such as Girl With The Crystal Plumage, A Quiet Place In The Country and House With The Laughing Windows, this obscure library LP is one of the few fully formed concept albums from the recently reappraised discography of Rome's most versatile and adventurous female production music composer Daniela Casa. Onc…

As a protégé of François Bayle and Luc Ferrari who had studied classical music before immersing himself in found-sound manipulati…

After a twenty-three-year hiatus, The Dance of Reality marks the triumphant return of Alejandro Jodorowsky, the visionary Chilean filmmaker behind cult classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain. In the radiantly visceral autobiographical film, a young Jodorowsky is confronted by a collection of compelling characters that contributed to his burgeoning surreal consciousness. For the 2023 British Textile Biennial, collaborative artists Nick Jordan and Jacob Cartwright created a new film, Larksong, and textiles installation, in Goodshaw Chapel - a nonconformist Baptist chapel established by textile workers and farm labourers in 1760. With the chapel as a central leitmotif, the film captures the surrounding landscape of cloughs, rivers and moorlands, laced with the remnants and imprints of the textile workers and industries that shaped the environment.
The musical scor…

*2024 stock* "There is no horror more visceral than the horror of the impersonal, so it makes sense that Mica Levi, composing the film's score, would turn to the master of elemental horror György Ligeti, whose ability to gather masses of semitones into translucent wisps without a center made The Shining, which relied heavily on his work Lontano, the scariest movie ever made. (Watch that film with the music off, I still maintain, and it becomes a particularly caustic domestic comedy.)
The score o…
The studies with Goffredo Petrassi and the association with Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza let the Avant-garde
playing an important role in the career of Ennio Morricone, who wrote many contemporary pieces for himself, but then the author composed soundtracks where dissonance played a major role. Limited edition on crystal clear vinyl. A really moody little record from Ennio Morricone – spare, subtle, and extremely beautiful – touched with notes of sadness and remorse, but also handled with a strong spirit of redemption, “La Califfa" (1970) is a rare example, probably very rare, in which the director and author of the book on which the film is inspired coincide; we're talking about Antonio Bevilacqua, who won the Nastro D'Argento prize as Best New Director with this film.
The film deals …
Sublime, ethereal minimalism: the first drawing together of Hiroyuki Onogawa’s soundtrack compositions, plotting a decade of music for films by cult filmmaker Gakuryū Ishii. ‘Sequenced into an album by Onogawa himself, this retrospective spans a fertile period of collaboration with Ishii, through soundtracks for three remarkable films — August in the Water (1995), Labyrinth of Dreams (1997), and Mirrored Mind (2005) — where the cinema is texturally and sensually imbued with the spiritual, ambien…
