John Tchicai (1936-2012) was a Danish-Congolese alto saxophonist and one of the most distinctive voices in free jazz. A key figure in both the American and European avant-garde, he played on landmark recordings including John Coltrane's Ascension and Albert Ayler's New York Eye and Ear Control, before returning to Europe and founding Cadentia Nova Danica.
