Mats Gustafsson

Mats Gustafsson, born in Umeå in 1964, is a Swedish saxophonist, improviser and composer whose baritone and tenor playing has the force of a rock band. He leads or co-leads The Thing, Fire!, Gush, Sonore, Swedish Azz and the NU Ensemble, has played in Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet and Barry Guy's New Orchestra, and has worked with Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, Otomo Yoshihide, Yoshimi and Ken Vandermark. Eighteen hundred concerts and more than two hundred records across Europe, Australia, Africa, the Americas and Asia have made him one of the busiest figures in free music, and a collector and advocate of its history through his writing, his label work and the Discaholic Corner website, where he trades records and interviews his heroes.

Two Balls Are Enough
The debut album from the duo of Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and Swedish reedist Mats Gustafsson - both musicians have routinely blown past the rules of the traditions from which first emerged—folk and free jazz, respectively—to explore constantly expanding worlds. It was only a matter of time before these iconoclasts collided to create something wonderfully raw and unexpected.
Vindögæ
*2026 stock* Reed players Mats Gustafsson and Andreas Røysum bonded over common understandings of the physical and political dimensions of music. Across generations and other accountant-like statistics (zzz...), they decided in 2021 to start playing together as a duo, and thus Vindögæ was unleashed on the Norwegian audience. It was on five cold December evenings, during which the country once again was preparing for lockdown, that the sound of Vindögæ opened up to a much-limited club audience. T…

Backengrillen
”Music and art without definite labels is a necessity for a better living - create your own individual genres and open up for more death-jazz-core-noise-metal-poetry to enter your world of destroying the local and global stupidities around us” - Mats Gustafsson "We really hope this slab of stupid, violent death rock will ruin someone’s day. Haha." - David Sandström Backengrillen is a new ensemble with their roots in HC, punk, noise and free Jazz. All members from Umeå, with roots in the original…
Now Jazz Now 100 Essential Free Jazz & Improvisation Recordings 1960-80 (Book)
277 pages. 196 x 268 mm. Open NOW JAZZ NOW and you're not just looking at a book - you're entering the minds of three lifelong obsessives. Byron Coley (music writer and critic), Mats Gustafsson (saxophonist, The Thing, Fire!), and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth founder, solo artist) have spent decades accumulating, discussing, debating, and above all listening to free jazz and free improvisation. This book is the result of that shared mania. What they've created isn't a conventional history or a ra…

"In the quarter century since the members of AALY Trio were last in the studio together there have been countless performances and albums made by the core members of the band. The remarkable parallels that existed between the improvised music scenes in Stockholm and Chicago from 1995 to 2000 extended well beyond the collaboration with AALY and me. Those circumstances are no longer the same due to the shifting sands of the international scene: artists, venues, record labels, writers, radio DJs, a…
Baro 101
"Baro 101" unites Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen-Love, and Masele Asmamaw for an electrifying fusion of Scandinavian free jazz and Ethiopian traditions. The album’s two expansive tracks showcase intense improvisation, with Asmamaw’s krar injecting unique rhythms and melodies, creating a bold, genre-defying musical journey.
Pivot
"The band showed up, four folks from three different spots on the globe -- Chicago (Vandermark, Reid); Nickelsdorf, Austria (Gustafsson); Philadelphia (Taylor). They assembled their gear and sound-checked at the studio. There was a four-way freedom at play, structures but liberties and no need for elaborate explanation. Everyone spoke the same shorthand. Cues were understood; timings were implicit and considered; space was made for chances to be taken. In creative music, you sometimes need to re…
Live At The South Bank
2025 stock ** "On South Bank - the most vital and essential document of Reid and Hebden's five-year partnership-- it feels clear that, at least onstage, they were finally able to go the distance. The invocation "Morning Prayer" opens slowly, circling in space with a meditative calm. For 17 minutes, the pair traces lines around the other's rhythm, Hebden's electronics and keys shaping a cradle for Reid's busy tom-and-cymbal patter, and vice versa. Back in 2006, on Volume 1, "Morning Prayer" felt …

*2025 stock* "Listening to the tapes of this live concert from Culturen Västerås, persuaded me that certain attributes of the playing of Mats Gustafsson and Raymond Strid are indeed bound with “Terroir”. There is probably a useful Swedish word describing this, but the French word nevertheless seems appropriate in describing a sense of place, something earthy and powerful. My thoughts moved to volcanoes and in particular glaciers, which of course abound in Sweden. The explosive power of the volca…
