Eleh began in 1999 as an exploration of analog synthesis, focused on low-frequency difference tones and other resonant acoustic phenomena: simple waveforms from analog synthesizers, HP tube oscillators and guitars, shaped with minute precision into slow-changing drones whose physical presence is as important as the sound itself. Turned up loud, the music fills the room and seems to stop time; it is as much something felt as heard.
The Floating Frequencies / Intuitive Synthesis series is the foundation of that work. The first volume, recorded in 2004-2005 and released in 2006 with the words 'Pure Sound. Pure Volume. Pure Analog.', was dedicated to La Monte Young; the second (2007) to Charlemagne Palestine; the third (2008) to Pauline Oliveros, which says a lot about where Eleh comes from. Pieces like 'In The Ear Of The Gods', 'Tone Phase 1 For 2 Guitars & 4 Oscillators', 'Black Mountain 1933', 'Pulsing Study Of 7 Sine Waves' and 'Bass Pulse In Open Air' are among the purest statements of American drone minimalism of the last decades.
This complete set gathers the three original volumes and Volume IV, which adds 'Phase Two: Modal Drones' and 'Study For New Growth / Lost Contours'. The 2025 edition was mastered by Tom Eaton at Sounds & Substance. Four cassettes published by Cassauna, the tape imprint of Important Records.
