Cornelius Cardew - English composer, founding member of the Scratch Orchestra, later a fierce critic of the experimental music he had helped create - is the most historically weighted presence here, his contribution predating the radical political turn that would define his final decade. The pianist Ellsworth Snyder was a significant interpreter of new music in the American university context, and this document captures a cross-section of compositional approaches in the early 1970s avant-garde, alongside works by David Ahlstrom, Charles Hamm, and Burt Levy.
