Cornelius Cardew founded the Scratch Orchestra in London in 1969 with Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton, a large ensemble open to anyone, trained musicians and amateurs alike. Each member kept a scratchbook of personal accompaniments, short pieces notated in words, drawings or diagrams, and Scratch Music gathers a wide selection of them.
Among the contributors are Cardew himself, Lou Gare, David Jackman, Christopher Hobbs, Skempton and the painter Tom Phillips, with many others from the orchestra. Edited by Cardew and published by Latimer New Directions in London in 1972.
