Burton Greene was one of the original ESP pianists, a founder member of the Jazz Composers Guild, and one of the few Americans of that generation who packed up and moved permanently to Europe rather than waiting for the American scene to catch up. Settled in Amsterdam from 1969, he spent the following decades working across free improvisation, Eastern European Jewish material and outright abstraction, usually for tiny labels and usually to no fanfare whatsoever. Firmanence comes from that European stretch, released on the small Italian Fore imprint, and it has the unguarded quality of music made entirely outside any commercial calculation.
