John Cage wrote First Construction (In Metal) in 1939 in Seattle for six percussionists, with thunder sheets, brake drums, orchestral bells, gongs lowered into water and a piano whose strings are struck with a metal rod. The rhythmic structure is built on proportions of sixteen units, and the piece hits hard and clean, a long way from his later silence.
James Tenney conducts a live broadcast from the KPFK studio on 27 May 1973, with William Winant, John Bergamo and Dean Drummond among the players. The piece starts on side A and ends on side B. An unofficial 7 inch from 1995, limited to 200 copies.
