Tiheäsalo & Ahti are Topias Tiheäsalo and Niko-Matti Ahti from Turku, Finland. Four Letters – Life was first released by Glistening Examples in the US and is now being released as a CD in Europe by Passing Tone.
Four Letters – Life touches on the very basic issues of human condition, life and death, and the preparedness for something that is impossible to be prepared for. The work could be described as a fragmentary and associative piece of sound art more coherent than the sum of its parts. It touches the musique concrète tradition: it's main ingredients are field recordings, speech, acoustic guitars, electric sound sources and the sounds of everyday objects. The work contains dialogue in Finnish – these parts have been translated into English and can be found on the cover of the CD.
Tiheäsalo and Ahti both have worked in the field of music and sound art for the couple of decades. Tiheäsalo is known as an improvising guitarist and also for his music for films and silent film screenings. In 2019 he was nominated for Ariel Award in Mexico for his music score for Kyzza Terrazaza's film Bayoneta. Ahti has been part of many Finnish collaborations during the years and the latest release he is part of is Ahti & Ahti's Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear? released by Ouidah in April 2020. Tiheäsalo and Ahti are also part of Himera, a work group organizing concerts and a yearly festival in Turku.
