Hannah is a project written, recorded and mixed by Cole. It was composed for David Ryan's exhibition Civil Hope (l'eau qui fend la pierre avec l'herbe - Acte 1). It was heard in the exhibition space at the Maison Salvan (France) from October 14 to December 16, 2023. Hannah is David Ryan's Irish aunt, a central and beloved figure in the vast world of the visual artist's work. Cole's sound creation is tinged with mythology. Powerful forces seem to confront each other on different scales. The protagonists of her texts experience conflict right from the family sphere. They also experience bloody war and injustice, with the twentieth-century “Troubles” in North of Ireland in the background. Last but not least, nature is also present, both as an ultimate resource and as a total fragility due to the actions of humans against it.

Over the course of six tracks - the first letter of each of whose titles recomposes the first name Hannah - the artist's words and voice spread with a kind of concentrated ardor, a gentle determination. Something of the order of lyrical incantation emanates from this work, but with a counterbalancing effect: the music enveloping the voice always appears masterful, tenuous. What could “simply” be a proposal of “sound poetry” is nourished by a musical style that, always experimentally, seeks to link itself to genres such as ambient, folk and downtempo. The fact remains, however, that it's the voice that shapes the 6 propositions. Often long, they seek to establish their hypnotic minimalism in space. Cole's work perhaps aims at a form of reparation, both for the benefit of particular beings, whom it identifies, and also in a more generic, open way. Through what is sensitively produced by listening to it, something is indeed happening...
